What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

In short, cosmetic acupuncture is the anti-aging aid for your skin.

Your skin is THE largest organ of the body. It takes up around 7% of your body’s total weight. Think of it is a map that reflects the harmony of your internal organs. If your internal organs aren’t happy, it will reflect on this very large map – acne, eczema, discoloration, signs of aging… how do we fix this? Our Toronto naturopaths will explain below.

Cosmetic acupuncture is your anti-aging aid. Acupuncture, originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine, is based on the principle of inserting needles into “meridians” (or pathways) on your body. Each pathway reflects a different organ in your body. By stimulating these pathways, we can do things like improve digestion, promote liver detoxification, enhance blood flow to the face – all contributing to clear and beautiful skin.

Now let’s look at in Western terms – it makes sense that if we insert needles or any foreign body into the skin, an inflammatory response will be induced. Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting itself from foreign objects. Once this inflammatory response is triggered, there is an increase of blood cells (and thus nutritive substances) being brought to the inflamed area. This is why cosmetic acupuncture works so well in improving nutrition to the face.

Your skin is composed of three tissue layers. From outermost to innermost: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (or subcutaneous tissue). For the purposes of cosmetic acupuncture, we enter the needle through dermis when aiming to correct fine lines and wrinkles. Cosmetic acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural collagen as a filler for wrinkles. When attempting to increase muscle tone of the face, the needles are inserted through the hypodermis. The needles tone facial muscles to help with skin sagging.

Some disclaimers about cosmetic acupuncture. It is NOT a natural face lift, and is not a replacement for Botox! Natural therapies cannot replace what cosmetic surgery procedures can do. Like many natural therapies, it does happen gradually over a period of time. What cosmetic acupuncture is, is a way to balance your internal organs (and improve biochemical processes such as liver detoxification), promote collagen production, and improve muscle tone. It is an anti-aging aid, and a tool for enhancing your own natural beauty
